The Devilrock Four have been rather quiet of late. However, it seems their recent hiatus from the live scene has proven fruitful with the band reemerging from their break clutching a brand new album in their hands. ‘Night is Falling’ is the follow up to the widely received debut album ‘First in Line’ and consists of eleven tracks delivered up in true Devilrock Four style. Although still a rock and roll album, this work is testament to a band that has kept their roots whilst still evolving somewhat in style. There is more of a focus on melodies and vocals on this record compared to their previous work but still no shortage of blistering guitars or pounding drums.
An acoustic introduction leads the way into the title track that showcases the musical progression of the band. Just as you think “Hang on, is this the same band?” track three ‘Wrecking Ball’ jolts you back to the ferocious sweat soaked early days of the group. ‘Show Me Love’ then hits you with a soulful groove before ‘Less Than Nothing’ aggressively assaults your aural senses, in a good way of course. This mix of new and old styles continues through the entire album yet it flows freely and uninterrupted. An album that has been crafted as exactly that, an album, and not just a vessel for the one or two singles that it may hold. Eleven separate works yet one entire overall piece of work. Just like the good old days. Fans of The Devilrock Four may be initially thrown when they first hear this album. To them I say, take your time, listen, and listen again. It will all make sense. ‘Night is Falling’ accurately captures the Australian rock and roll sound of old as well as being the necessary next step for The Devilrock Four. Enjoy.
The album is released on vinyl LP and digital download May 27 through High Kick Records. The band is set to tour it extensively in June/July.
